Last week

Last week till the final presentation. Just some thoughts and list of things I am still working on that are yet to complete. I will be hunting on the materials for flashlight and stand first. Then sound I might make my own sound effects with garageband and also download some sound effects and free source (freesound.org) then mix them in Adobe Audition.

  1. Sound (ambience, SFX)
  2. Special crafted Flashlight
  3. Stand for sensor and laptop

Another thing that I am a little worry is the exportation of the sketch it seems to be abit laggy in windows but work perfectly fine in Mac. As when I preview the sketch in Processing in windows, it starts to take quite some time to run it. One last thing is that i bought USB 3.0 extension cable for the sensor has arrived but I am not sure if I want to use it during presentation or not because of the laggy-ness of the sketch, I am afraid using an extension will worsen the situation.

User Interface Design

Landing Screen – the part where audience first see before interacting or pass by

I have decided to use video as the background and added an interactive feature of a firefly simulation following the movement input of flashlight. The feature adds liveness and gives user the feeling of them having the control over. In the landing screen, it is a scene of forest in a more distance angle, slightly like peeking thru the woods with the installation logo at the center. A little tent and camp fire was featured to guide user’s imagination with the narrative as well. At the bottom, a slow blinking sentence “Press to Begin” was there to let users know how to start/next step.

Navigation Guide – instructions shown after user “Press to Begin”, part where before interaction begins

I want the guide to be as simple as possible, so I’ve only use 1 sentence to describe each step together with an looping animation. It is exported as a video file. The animation also helps the guide to be more attracting, because the “tutorial” parts are always the part that users like to skip, and yeah i dont feature a skip button in it because the navigation guide is super duper important. Similarly, user “Press to proceed” – interaction begins after this, flashlight simulation triggered.

Closing Screen – when user found all 4 animals

A closing screen will be shown when user found all 4 animals, congratulating them and allow them to rewatch the motion graphics of each animals. They just need to click on the animals, then that animal’s motion graphic will be played. After motion graphic finish playing, it will go back the the closing screen with 4 choices. But if its idle/users did not make any selection after 25 secs, it will automatically go back the the Landing screen.

Color exploration

In my previous visual explorations, I feel the colors are still not good enough yet.. Still feel it lack of something, so I have been surfing around and looking for inspirations. I found a few artist that have really good work in color tone and mood in their artwork, really really impressive ones.. So I’ll spend some time to play around with colors before i come out with my mood board. I need to put my audience, message and theme in consideration as well.

JULIETTE OBERNDORFER

Her work makes people feel mysterious but with lots of mixed feeling/emotions. The work is mostly set in the night, the colors are cold with always with touch of beautiful use of vibrant colors to enhance the mood.
